She wakes with a start at that. There's several more snaps and she looks a little bewildered, trying to find the source but it's pitch black almost and she can barely see. All she can do is hear some scuffling and then...
She sees it. A fire. Hands being warmed over that fire.
Someone only yards away from her has lit a fire. In the pitch black.
And signaled every tribute in the arena that they're there.]
[Katniss is still in her tree. The idiot with the fire is still there too. So far it seems they haven't noticed Katniss, and she's not daring to move yet. That fire is a beacon to anyone out there screaming 'HEY I'M HERE' and if she comes down now she doesn't know who she could run into.
But it's been hours. And she's starting to believe they're safe...
Until she hears it. Several pairs of feet breaking out into a run, catching the person with the fire before they can even react. You can't see it, but you can hear. Hear her begging and pleading and the loud, agonizing scream. And then laughter. Congratulations. "Twelve down and eleven to go." Hooting and hollering.
Careers.
They search the area, then decide to head out so the body can be cleared. They start moving towards Katniss, who doesn't breathe in fear of being caught. Then they stop 10 yards from her tree.]
"Shouldn't we have heard a cannon by now?" "I'd say yes. Nothing to prevent them from going in immediately." "Unless she isn't dead." "She's dead, I stuck her myself." "Then where's the cannon?" "Someone should go back. Make sure the job's done." "Yeah. We don't want to have to track her down twice." "I said she's dead!"
[There's more arguing until...]
We're wasting time! I'll go finish her and let's move on.
[Finally the body has been cleared off. And the Careers are long gone. It's then that Katniss manages to jump out of her tree now. Cock her head slightly to the side, and gives a knowing smile.
She doesn't know shit.
She's just playing a game.
She's about to head off, but she stops to check her snares. She should still go, but she needs to check it. Just to see. And sure enough, there's a rabbit there. She cleans and guts the animal, leaving the head, innards, feel, tail, and skin under a rock. Then hurries to the fire from the little fire starter, which is still warm enough to cook the meat. Now she doesn't have to signal anyone again.]
She tries to put on the sunglasses now, the sun seems to be too bright. But she takes them off almost immediately. They don't work at all, and only skew her vision even more.
[For a moment, the girl looks hopeful. She's found berries, and surely that means water can't be far off, right? But berries have juices. Juices that could at least make this more bearable.
But once she picks them, they don't look like blueberries. And when she breaks it open the juice is bloodred.
Now she's not so sure she can trust the berries. If you're not 100 percent sure, then don't chance it.

[Katniss nearly falls out of the tree.
It's Peeta's voice, that last one.]

She just keeps going further downhill.
And slowly dying of thirst.]
1:29 pm
It never does for her.
She tries to put on the sunglasses now, the sun seems to be too bright. But she takes them off almost immediately. They don't work at all, and only skew her vision even more.
So she keeps going.]

So she throws them away.]
4:16 pm
But she has a new idea she has to try.
She climbs a tree, working as best she can in her shaky state to climb as high as she possibly can in an attempt to find water from above.
But there's nothing.
Just more forest. Everywhere.]

She climbs up the nearest tree and belts herself in. She's not hungry, but she sucks on a rabbit bone for something to do.]

Katniss is going to pretend her throat doesn't burn and she doesn't feel betrayed and try to sleep now.]
